Laura lives and works in New York City. She received her MFA from Indiana University in Painting and Drawing. She has an active exhibition record and has held adjunct and tenure track university teaching positions.
Her paintings play with elements of kitsch and decoration in an attempt to create a contemporary world with connections to the past. The use of pattern disguises the figure and narrative in decorative compositions reminiscent of wallpaper or tapestries. The paintings reference needlepoint, quilting, lace making, or other crafts associated with bygone days.
The repeating patterns may represent thoughts that repeat backward, memory. Often memories struggle to find relevance in the present. The paintings, with their references to antiquity, allow the viewer to reflect on what has been lost, gained and retained through the years. The work is not intended to feel nostalgic, rather, it aims to rethink what has past in order to improve and thrive in the present.
